8/28/2023 0 Comments Gord downie health update![]() Gord was surrounded by artwork - books, music, lots of poetry. And he kept his book of poetry ( All Of Us the collected poems) pretty close. ![]() Like Josh said that was his language, that's how he coped, that's how he kind of figured out the meaning of his life, was his words and music.īaltin: Were there works of art he gravitated to during the time of making this record?ĭownie: Well, he's a huge Raymond Carver fan, I'll tell you that much. ![]() Cause I do hear some of the things in the words and whether it's some kind of loneliness or fear or whatever it might be I still find myself wanting to redo it all over again and make him feel better. Like you wish you could go back and make it all better for him. And as someone who was very close to him while he was ill it does, at times, definitely conjure up a lot of feelings of things that you would feel - guilt or just wondering where he was at and still having that kind of caretaker attitude. And this record was no exception.ĭownie: I have to say, and maybe it's just the grieving process, when I initially would hear some of these records I'd kind of get perhaps a bit more of a snapshot or at least try to put yourself in Gord's shoes while he was putting these songs together. Everything that he was going through was often reflected through his art. And I think Gord's music, always, it was very much a mirror of his life. And the other one was when the artist becomes the art. And one of them was through this record Gord was surrendering through his art to his accept his fate. And we thought, "How can we use this record to propel Gord's artistry forward?" And Patrick had a couple of lines that I really loved and have been sort of using a lot. We had the opportunity to talk about this record - Gord, Patrick and I - for a few years, I think this record, between Patrick and I became a real bonding point as well. It's inevitable, a record you make six months prior your attitude and your perspective on it changes a bit. And we feel it'll kind of have the same effect on all the listeners and fans.īaltin: Are there things you hear differently or appreciate in a new way on the record after a few years?įinlayson: I think with distance you always have a perspective that evolves and changes. So we feel pretty lucky to have it and we're finally ready to share it. But at the same time there's a real healing power to it as well. And at times of course you hear it and it's super painful, it's a real intimate record and there's a lot of those feelings. And over time it just seemed that the record, it became its own medicine for us. Those decisions aren't easy when you're grieving your brother or your best friend. And it's not that we kept it under lock and key, but in the time since Gord has died so many decisions and thoughts about his legacy and how we're going to unveil it or what have you. Patrick Downie: The timing has worked out that I really do feel like we're finally ready to let go of this record.
